What the Students Say:
Thoughts about our time together with Saras are alway close, I am happy to share some with you. Love Delyse  In a lifetime of journeys the most significant I have embarked upon is the learning of self. Along the way I encountered a workshop led by Saraswathi Vasudevan's supported by Marieke from Marieke’s Art of Living and shared by a group of inspiring women. The energy was powerful, the honesty humbling and the wisdom profound.  Twenty eight women in a room will always generate emotion and we shared across the spectrum: tears spilled, laughter flowed, we danced, and ideas blossomed.  Saras guided us to breathe with deep awareness and to seek clarity within each life brimming inhalation and exhalation - settled there in that unremarkable daily act I discovered remarkable truths. How blessed to find myself in that place, on these days, connected to the greater possibilities of my being, through the spiritual benevolence of Saras. Her teachings guide me daily and I will always be grateful for our encounter. D Graham March 2016
I like to think of myself as a seasoned, passionate traveller having edited travel magazines and invested copious amounts of time and money exploring the world. My experience on a tailored one week Art of Living tour curated by Marieke Brugman took things to a whole new level. Not only did I stay on an extraordinary tea estate in Darjeeling (where director Wes Andersen has stayed no less), ate inspired organic food and practiced asanas with one of the most accomplished yoga teachers in India but I received wonderful private talks on India's history, walked through the finest tea plantations in the world and was immersed in mythical landscapes. It was a seamless, transformative experience. Marieke's networks, local knowledge and approach to creating fabulous guest experiences is second to none. She is a master of travel, each tour a work of art and I can't wait for my next Art of Living trip. Emily Ross Director Emily Ross Bespoke October 2015

Your Yoga Teacher: Saraswathi Vasuvedan
We are honoured to have Saras teach this programme.
Saraswathi began her journey in the path of yoga and healing 25 years ago.  She studied and trained in the tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya that is strongly founded in the teachings of Patanjali and specializes in adapting yoga to the unique needs and abilities of each individual. She holds two Masters Degrees (in Nutrition and Psychology) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Yoga, and has also been actively involved in yoga research bringing the much-needed scientific perspective to yoga therapy.

In 2010, Saraswathi, along with her husband, founded YogaVahini, dedicated to Specialised Yoga Training, Therapy & Research with centres in Chennai and Hyderabad and runs regular training programs for lay practitioners, teachers and therapists. Her dream is the bring personalised yoga therapy into mainstream health care in India and is seriously working towards that mission.
Saraswathi works by integrating the traditional wisdom of Yoga with modern facilitation skills. Her real passion however, lies in the area of yoga therapy, working with people in a one-to-one healing environment.

She is gifted with an innate capacity to establish deeply nurturing connections with her students that enables and empowers them to heal from within. Her monthly newsletters are like pearls and so worthwhile to subscribe to.

Subjects Saraswathi will work with include:

  • the traditional wisdom of yoga combined with an eclectic array of mind-body techniques to aid in the understanding of the human system that facilitate positive change.
  • how to develop an in-depth understanding of who you are – as each student has a unique physiology, skeletal-muscular structure, mental & emotional patterns and energy levels.
  • Yoga as a personal journey towards wellness, healing and self-mastery by evolving personalized yoga programs that enable you to heal from within and realize your highest potential.
  • a Study of the Sutras from a fresh perspective that throws light on the practical, simple, relevant effective ways we can change our actions in daily life.

Additional to instructing all the yoga sessions whether they be meditation, pranayama, asanas, theoretical discussions, philosophical investigation, Saras will also make herself available to students for private consultations.
One initial private session is provided to each student for whom Saras will design a personalised practice based on each person’s unique needs and capabilities.

In our time together, we will walk, chant, practice asanas (postures), pranayam (breathing practices), meditation and relaxation techniques, and simple mindfulness training exercises (such as mindful eating and mindful walking) that will help you develop awareness throughout the day – all techniques and practices that you will be able to take home and apply to your daily life and perhaps even share with your loved ones.

SHREYAS YOGA RETREAT:

Shreyas prides itself on its service, which is an attempt to apply the eternal Vedic instruction – Athiti Devo Bhava – or ‘treat thy guest as an embodiment of the Divine’.
This the solicitous staff achieve to an extraordinary degree as all staff members, irrespective of their role, mandatorily but with beautiful commitment, practice their own yoga daily as well as participating in group chanting.
Accommodation comprises tent-like canvas- roofed cottages spread around the expansive and verdant gardens and 25-acre premises and are "monastically luxurious".  There are 8 garden cottages, 3 poolside cottages and 1 three-bedroom suite cottage. The garden cottages have superb garden bathrooms, a private verandah and are well spread out to ensure privacy. The pool cottages are located next to each other near the swimming pool and there’s a 3-bedroom cottage in the gardens. All are air-conditioned, have an overhead fan, complimentary Internet access, intercom, local and international dialling, hair dryer, bathrobes, slippers and electronic safe. The linen & furnishings are of the highest quality and the ‘finish’ of almost every aspect is immensely stylish & comfortable.

REACHING SHREYAS:

Students need to reach BANGALORE no later than 27 August and Art of Living will make all the ground arrangements including arrival/hotel and transfers to the retreat.
Indian residents can make their own flight arrangements.

Designed by Marieke Brugman, this programme combines her two greatest passions: a love of India that has evolved over the twenty years of leading cultural tours to the subcontinent with her life growing in yoga. Marieke completed her yoga teacher training with Transformational Hatha Yoga under the Yoga Alliance International founded by Swami Vidyanand. Marieke first attended Saraswathi’s inaugural course, Foundations of Viniyoga: a Therapeutic Approach, held in Australia 4 years ago and has continued an inspiring collaboration with Saraswathi who led her yoga retreats in Bali in 2011 and in South India in 2012, as well as various workshops in Australia.

Over the last decade Marieke has been honoured to offer and share remarkable teachers and special places in the experience of yoga with others.

More adventurous souls might consider joining Marieke in Kashmir in June.
This is trekking/glamping like no other and each day starts with movement, breath and yogic focus.
